Significant Employment Statistics (July 2021)

Every month, the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics releases what they refer to as “The Employment Situation.” This monthly report details important occupational employment statistics for the previous month.

At Unemployment Tracker, this report is highly intriguing to us, as it provides important insight into the job market on a consistent basis. We will be highlighting what we feel are some of the most important statistics reported in “The Employment Situation” monthly.

First of all, in July 2021, the total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 943,000, and the overall unemployment rate dropped from 5.9% in June to 5.4% in July. The number of unemployed people lowered from 9.5 million to 8.7 million Americans, a significant change after the stagnation we experienced in June.

In July, hospitality and leisure jobs increased by 380,000, as pandemic-related restrictions continued to ease in some parts of the country. Two-thirds of the job gain was in food services and drinking places (+253,000).

Among the unemployed, the number of job leavers (people who voluntarily left their previous jobs) increased decreased from 942,000 to 930,000. Despite this drop, the amount of job leavers is still significantly higher than it was in May 2021 (778,000). This is likely due to new job opportunities becoming more readily available.

In July, 4,960,000 people filed unemployment claims. This number continues to trend downward following April, May, and June.
